Once again, it is reported San Diego has an outward migration – people are leaving and the population is dropping. The exact same thing occurred in the mid 90’s after several years of increasing real estate values.
San Diego has enjoyed huge increases in the value of real estate, suddenly making folks who never had a lot of money able to pay cash for a home in a less expensive area by selling their current home. Lots of those people did move or are moving to Texas, Oregon, Idaho, and other cheap markets. Some are even moving to Riverside County and still commuting to work in San Diego.
But let’s not forget that by the year 2000 most of the folks that had moved out of state in the early to mid-90’s came back. They missed the weather, the attractions and all the great things about San Diego.
I would expect San Diego to have an inward migration by 2010 with these folks deciding to return.
Yes, it’s expensive to live in San Diego, but you get what you pay for and there are plenty of people willing to do just that.
